Al Davis

A. I. Davis originates from the republic of Harlem and now calls Beaufort, South Carolina “home.”  Davis is a multi-talented artist, most noted for his wood and bronze sculptures.  He invokes the Spirits of the “Middle Passage” and the Griot tones that constantly resonate in the South Carolina Lowcountry.   Voices from that infamous passage move us to remember them, their whispers motivate and direct Davis’ molding of wood through the filing, sanding and finishing of bowls, heads and torsos.  The fissures and inclusions are reminders of the passing of time, of life, of sin, of atonement, of nature, of the world and its acceptance or denial of us.  Most recently, Davis has added photography to his repertoire.   Creating a “Show of Hands,” a collection of photographs taken of 100 people in the Lowcountry.

“…We work in the dark, we do what we can, we give what we have.

Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task.

The rest is the madness of Art…” (H. J.)
