Alyne Harris
Alyne Harris, a well-known, self-taught Southern Folk Artist was born in 1943 and has lived in Gainesville, Florida all of her life. She uses brushes, her fingertips, or anything available—such as a stick or a kitchen utensil to paint acrylics on board, paper and canvas.
Ms. Harris has a vivid imagination, great fervor and often creates well into the night. She takes her inspiration from church, black history, memories from childhood, and nature. Her favorite subjects include angels (black and white “because there’s no particular color up there in heaven”), church, choirs, black people, “slave life,” flowers and bees.
Ms. Harris’ work hangs in many collections including: American Folk Art Museum, New York, NY, New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans, LA. Most recently, Alyne Harris has received the honor of her artwork being displayed as a backdrop in the movie Nights in Rodanthe starring actors Diane Lane and Richard Gere.
