Charles Desaussure

Charles Desaussure was born in 1955, in Yemassee, SC. At the age of five his father moved the family to President Street in Charleston, SC. Charles was one of eleven children. The Desaussures were the first family of color to move into this part of downtown Charleston. 


Charles currently lives in Charleston, SC and is a full-time painter. As a memory painter, he paints the Gullah lifestyle- images from his boyhood… His grandmother, her garden, children playing in the streets of Charleston, guys hanging out and playing cards, "Jook Joints," and of Harlem, NY, where his sister lived.


Charles Desaussure has shown his work at the Avery Institute of the College of Charleston, South Carolina State University I. P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium Exhibit “Journey from Africa to Gullah,” and The Red Piano Too Art Gallery on St. Helena Island, SC.
